An Account About Our School Council

Rockland St Mary Primary School has a school council.

Firstly, we talk about the school and what we can improve. For example, we made a code of conduct for people who bully people. Secondly, we talk about what we do and share different news. The people who do it are Jem, Donal, Jasmine, Jonty, Tilly, Ava, Ms. McGee and Sarah Carter.

Next, we listen and debate about ideas that people in classes say and do the ones that we think we can do, e.g. a football goal or a basketball net. If we can do it and we have enough money, we might have on installed in the school.

We also use examples of things in the meeting. While we try to use all of the people’s ideas, sometimes we cannot.

Finally, I’ve only been in one meeting but I think it is important for the school and everyone in the school. I think every child in the school should have a say because we have to agree or else it will not work at all.

School Council Meeting, 10th Feb. 2010

Present:  Jem Pritchard, Donal Ellison, Jasmine Atkins, Tilly Ellis,

             Ava Reynolds, Lucy Hockaday.

             Ms. McGee and Sarah Carter

Agenda:-  How to make our school grounds exciting.

Where to locate the bird feeders.

It has been suggested that the garden be re-instated in its original location.  The parish council have provided enough funds to pay for 5 raised beds.  A potato growing stacker and a mini greenhouse have been provided  by Morrisons.

It has also been suggested that the barked area (where the mobile used to be) could be used to accommodate a ‘Trim Trail’.  Forms are being asked to help fund this.

The Owls outside area is going to have a storage box placed inside the fence which can be used to store large outdoor games, such as chess, draughts, connect and tumble blocks.  These games will be available to everyone to use inside this area during break times.  However, pupils must be reminded that they can only use the equipment inside the storage box and nothing else.  All equipment must be put away neatly at the end of the break.

It was suggested that some of the bird feeders could be hung from the shed.  Ms. McGee will ask Mr. Bosworth to put up some hooks.

Councillors can ask their classes if they have any more suggestions to make the outside area more exciting.

Eco Council Meeting, 10th Feb. 2010

Present:  William Ringwood, Megan Tusting, Kieran Crawford,

Isaac Padilla Prewar, Finley Evans, Owen May.

               Miss Davies and Sarah Carter.

Agenda:  To discuss ways of saving energy around the school.

The ways of saving energy were identified as turning off lights,

closing doors, and making sure that the taps are turned off.

Miss Davies, William and Kieran will take weekly meter readings, Friday mornings before assembly, and keep a note of them.

Bitterns could then save these readings onto a spreadsheet and ultimately produce a graph of the usage.

All Eco Warriors must try to make sure that the lights are off, doors are shut and taps not left running.

Also a request was made from the Owls that any outgrown ‘ride-on’ toys could be donated to their class.
